St. Louis Park made history last week: after a city council vote, the western suburb will become the first city in the nation to offer solar-powered wireless internet access on a citywide basis. http://www.startribune.com/106/story/774412.html
ParkWifi had a test run in four locations around the city, but by July 2007 the network will be expanded to provide low-cost access ($14.95–$29.95/month) to businesses and homes within the city limits. Solar panels will power radio transmitters that will send and receive signals to and from city-owned computers, saving St. Louis Park $40,000 to $50,000 in energy costs each year.
