Fridley's Footprint

The Star Tribune reported last week that the St. Paul suburb of Fridley is considering joining four other Minnesota cities - St. Paul, Duluth, Apple Valley and Eden Prairie – and some 320 cities around the country in signing the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.

The USMCPA was formed after the Kyoto Protocol took effect in February of 2005. In the absence of official US support for the Kyoto Protocol, 10 mayors, representing some 3 million citizens, wrote a letter vowing to take additional actions to significantly reduce global warming pollution. The agreement was passed unanimously by the US Conference of Mayors in June of 2005.

Whether Fridley will join the fold will be determined at a council meeting on November 20.

I didn't realize that my city of St. Paul is on the list now! And by the way, the list of Minnesota cities participating, updated on the Seattle web site last week, is actually longer than this. It also includes Minneapolis, Rochester, and several other cities.
