We've previously discussed opportunities for insurers to help fight climate change. Now, a bit of news on that front for homeowners:
This summer, a new kind of insurance coverage becomes available in Washington and 25 other U.S. states. The new product from California-based Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. will allow residents to upgrade their homes with green features (using environmental safety and efficiency standards) after a loss. If a home is completely destroyed, it can be rebuilt to LEED standards.
Green options covered under the policy include Energy Star HVAC systems, non-toxic paints and carpeting, water-saving plumbing fixtures and responsible diversion of debris from the damage site.
Fireman's Fund, which was recently recognized by the Environmental Defense Fund in a 2008 report on innovative green businesses, first introduced a green insurance policy to commercial clients in 2006.
