How-To: Know If Solar Power is Right For You

With all our cloud-covered days, Seattle might not seem like the best location to install a solar power system. But according to FindSolar.com, the King County region gets a rating of 3.81 kilowatt hours per square mile, per day, which lands us smack dab in the middle of "OK" and "Great" on their Solar Rating Chart.

Whether you’re interested in Photovoltaics, which directly convert sunlight into electricity, solar hot-water heaters or just interested in general, FindSolar can help you decide if solar power is right for you.

One of the best features FindSolar offers is called My Solar Estimator, which is actually pretty fantastic. Enter a few basic facts like your location, your current utility cost and provider and building type, and they'll calculate your estimated system size and cost, as well as what savings and benefits you’ll gain. For example, the estimate can tell you how much a solar powered system will increase your property value, the average amount you’ll save on your utility bill, and how long it will take you to break even. The estimator will even find out what tax rebates or credits you can apply for and how much CO2 you’ll keep out of the atmosphere by switching to solar.

You can dive into even further detail by finding your assumed cost per watt with their "Cost to go Solar" report, which will appear near the bottom of your estimate.

FindSolar is only an estimate. To double-check the totals, they recommend finding a Solar Pro near you. The Solar Pro search engine can also tell you where to apply for loans and financial services in your area.

Remember, solar power is often a long-term commitment, but in the end you really will save money as you prevent CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
