Here are two interesting pieces from the Portland Tribune about how Portland is dealing with global warming and population growth:
The city’s overall water supply was never in jeopardy, but officials better get used to juggling the two systems. According to University of Washington professor Richard Palmer, climate changes caused by global warming could cause this year’s weather pattern to repeat – and even accelerate – in the future.
Over the past year, Metro has organized several efforts to better understand how to encourage more mixed-use growth in the centers. One was a local tour and lecture series called “Get Centered that included a panel discussion at the Hollywood Theatre — located in the Hollywood neighborhood, an area Metro Councilor Rex Burkholder thinks easily could accommodate more residents and jobs.
Another “Get Centered activity was a September Metro-sponsored field trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada’s third-largest city, where urban densities exceed those in the Portland area.
