Creating the Art of Climate Disruption

Tonight Precipice Alliance presents its inaurgural exhibtion of art about climate change. It's promised to be "...a huge party and lighting of a massive 900 ft. neon text-sculpture by artist Mary Ellen Carrol on the roof of the old American Can Company building in Jersey City."

Festivities will include a performance by Joan Osborne, DJ sets by Miss June D., Shelly (Death By DJ), and Julie Twinkle (White Dove), and a speech by The New York Times enviro journalist Andrew Revkin. Oh, and lots of food and wine.

Jersey City is an easy PATH ride (still only a buck-fifty one way), so don't let transit hold you back if you're a New Yorker. (Directions here.)

Precipice looks like an intriguing and savvy effort. The overall goal, according to its mission statement, is to fund public artworks that increase awareness of climate disruption. The board of directors includes fine and community art notables, and the sponsors are an interesting array of foundations combined with sustainability-oriented businesses, and others. I've been following art about the environment for many years -- looking forward to see what Precipice Alliance does next.

I can't make it to Jersey City tonight due to prior engagement, but we'd love a report-back for Worldchanging NYC. Click here to let us know how it was.

(Thanks, Glen!)

The event and the work were a success. Andrew Revkin said it all and reinforced Carroll's intention of having the viewer determine the specificity of the meaning for themselves when he said that it is a complex issue and perhaps this is part of the problem, that we can identify it, but we need to act. This is why the work is so poignant and such a success. Also, to create a typeface that is energy efficient---brilliant.

Thanks for the report, Kevin. It got so windy and rainy that night, that I did wonder how well the work came off. I'm glad to hear it was a success. Hope Precipice Alliance will be doing another work in our area, soon.
