Another Side of Los Angeles: Get Rid of the Plastic

Los Angeles is the land of smog, sprawl and cosmetic surgery, not known for its ecological or social consciousness. But many people, organizations and ideas are quietly fomenting revolution here. This Earth week, I'll share what these Worldchangers told me about the secretly green side of LA.

Amanda Barrett is one half of the band The Ditty Bops. She uses her many talents to promote worldchanging ideas and just started a non profit with her partner Abby Dewald, called You and I Save the World. Their first project is a Plastic Reduction Petition, promoting a plastax and reusable shopping bags.

What local Worldchanging organization, project or idea should be better known?

The Bicycle Kitchen -- a community space in Silverlake, run by volunteers who believe that bicycles are the ideal mode of transportation. You can learn about building, maintaining and riding bikes there.

Also, I wish more people would bring their own bags to the store and shop at the local farmer's market.

What one Worldchanging practice do you most wish to see flourish in Los Angeles?

Bringing your own canvas bag to the store.

If you were queen of Los Angeles for a day, what would you do?

I'd make it "Bicycle wherever you go day"

Describe the LA you'd like to see in 2027

A place where we've disposed of the Disposable Future idea!
