I was jogging the other day and saw my new favorite bumper sticker: "Trees are the Answer."
Simple as that.
I teach children around Los Angeles about urban sustainability. We talk about air, soil, and water quality, reducing, reusing, and recycling, and of course, trees. We talk about what trees need in order to grow big and strong (water, soil, air, sun, and love), and we talk about what trees give us.
Here's that basic list (in the order from the most frequent answers to the least):
* Oxygen
* Paper
* Wood
* Shade
* Beauty
* Food
* Medicine
(Note: Somehow the kids almost always forget to say food!)
Tonight, Monday, April 2, is the full moon. At a little organization called TreePeople, there will be a few full moon hikes (depending on your level) and live music. Come on out! You'll be gifted with a gorgeous view of the city, a rising moon, cool people, and yes, trees.
After all, they are the answer.
