Mara Hvistendahl

Mara Hvistendahl is a Shanghai-based freelance writer. She writes print and radio works about science, the environment, architecture, design, travel, and their myriad points of intersection.

Mara's work has appeared in Harper's, the Los Angeles Times, I.D., and other outlets. She writes a bimonthly column on Chinese science for Seed, where she is a contributing editor. She has been nominated for a Newswomen's Club of New York Front Page Award for a blog she wrote for the Village Voice.

After receiving a B.A. from Swarthmore College in comparative literature and Chinese, Mara attended Columbia School of Journalism on an international reporting scholarship, graduating in 2003 with an M.S. in magazine writing. She is fluent in Spanish and Chinese.

Mara moved to Shanghai from New York in 2004. She has also reported extensively from northern Mexico.
