Ingo Günther's Globes
Ethan Zuckerman, 14 Jun 05

Ingo Günther makes globes. Beautiful, strange globes that help people visualize social, political and environmental issues. One shows only landlocked nations; another life expectancy; world energy consumption; migration to New York City. One makes three-dimensional my personal totem image - a globe that portrays the world at night, showing what parts of the globe do and don't have electric light. Over the past 15 years, Günther - who claims he was too bad at drawing to get into art school and untrained as a journalist - has been linking investigative, quatitative journalism with sculture, producing over 300 powerful and insightful globes, on display at WorldProcessor.com.

I'm visualizing a set of webpages that update those images in real time - slowly changing, blinking lights across a virtual globe ...
