Congotronics
Cameron Sinclair, 13 Jun 05

On the border of Angola and Congo the band Konono No#1 have been building and playing electric likembes and hand carved mikes for the past 25 years. The result is crazy mix (MP3) of electronica, african drumming, chanting and whistles. The best part is seeing them in action -- this homebrew video (QT) shows off their unique style and great instruments.

Is it worldchanging? maybe not, but it's alot of fun regardless.

I think Gibson, Stephenson and others got it wrong back in the 80s. Africa, not Asia, most embodies the feel of cyberpunk.

Oh, I think this is worldchanging. If there can be so much grace, beauty and mastery amidst such hardship, there's abundant reason for hope.
