Free Geek
Alex Steffen, 11 Dec 03

Free Geek - "Helping the needy get nerdy since the beginning of the 3rd Millennium" - takes junked computers, rebuilds them, loads them with Linux and ships the resulting "freekboxes" to poor people and activist groups in the US and abroad. In the process, they wire the poor, keep toxic computer parts from winding up in landfills, and build skills in local communities. These folks should be showered with money.

Oooooh! They're in PORTLAND!

Now I know what I'm going to do with my current system when I get tired of upgrading it's obsolescent ass.

I wonder what they'll make of the custom fleckstone, black, and silver paint job . . .
